When we build a house, we want a solid foundation otherwise the house will fall. The same is true for our bodies. Cells make tissue, tissues make organs, organs make systems, and systems make the body. If we are not healthy at the cellular level, then our health can be affected.
Phase Angle (PhA) is a measurement of your cell health and is dependent on the intracellular (inside the cell) hydration status. Dehydration increases your chances of illness. Water helps us flush toxins and waste from our bodies; improves skin tone; helps maintain regularity and boosts our immune system. Unfortunately, drinking water is simply not enough to keep us hydrated at the cellular level.
Why is PhA important? PhA increases when you are healthy and decreases when you are not. PhA is a direct measurement of you cell membrane integrity. The cell membrane is there to protect the cell. The membrane keeps inside the cell what is supposed to be there and keeps out what is not. The membrane is where the cells communicate with one another and where a charge happens so the cell can function.
PhA is measured doing a simple test called Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). The BIA test takes approximately 20 seconds. There are no needles or discomfort. PhA is as individual as your fingerprint. It is influenced by many factors such as nutrient intake and body composition. Many machines exist to measure PhA and results will vary based on the machine used. The PhA measurement is a wonderful way to monitor your progress when undertaking a health journey.
Whether you are looking to improve your health or maintain an already healthy status, knowing your PhA is an important measure of health. The PhA can give you a good indication of what is going on inside your body and possibly help identify potential problems. The good news is there are ways to improve your Phase Angle!
At Integrative Acupuncture, we have been measuring Phase Angle on our patients for 10-plus years. While the PhA is not a complete measure of every aspect of health, the results help guide protocols for improving overall health.
